used to the fine public courses of Boston or nearby Plymouth, Mass. and Cape Cod make the trek to Millis, Mass. they are pleasantly surprised to find the superb conditions at Glen Ellen Country Club.
"Nothing drops off in terms of quality when golfers visit us from Boston and elsewhere," says Bill Ransom, director of sales for Glen Ellen, which recently underwent a several million dollar renovation redesign overseen by noted golf course architect Ron Pritchard. Pritchard is recognized for classical course designs and his specialty in restoring Donald Ross layouts.
"The upgrade has given Glen Ellen a whole new lease on life," Ransom continued. "From a marketing standpoint, it's been a great lift, and our customers, whether they are local or travel a ways to get to us, benefit."
The "new" Glen Ellen course encompasses the classical elements of the tract's original design and incorporates new 16 tee boxes, 22 new bunkers, re-contoured fairways, added length and one new green complex, on the third hole. A new irrigation system has greatly enhanced the overall condition of the course.
Glen Ellen, which can stretch to 6,634 yards and plays to a par of 72, is attracting attention from the Boston, Worcester and Providence, R.I. areas. The club is a Corcoran Jennison Property.
"We get blue collar people playing here and we host corporate outings and weddings," said Ransom. "It's a friendly, forgiving course with open fairways, which the corporate clients like because sometimes people play once or twice a year. But scratch players also enjoy the layout as well."
Ponds and a rambling stream come into play on a number of holes at Glen Ellen, which was originally built in 1962.
The layout has two par-threes--numbers two and eight--that play over water. The second hole can stretch to 218 yards from the back tees, while the eighth hole is a full carry over water to a large green.
Number 17 is a classic, difficult 411-yard dogleg left par four. The hole demands a hefty and accurate tee shot to avoid water left and right followed by a well struck mid- or long-iron to the green.
Glen Ellen also features two reachable par fives and two par-threes, including the second, measuring over 200 yards.
Greens fees are extremely reasonable for such a fine layout, and the club has several specials. For further information, call 508-376-2978 or visit www.glenellencc.com.
