Product of Week 4/11 - PowerPod II

PowerPod II Driver from Tiger Shark Golf

The driver did everything that was promised and with the proof from a Trackman Doppler radar launch monitor, the numbers backed the hype. The “Pod” was producing lower spin rates and a higher smash factor than any of the other drivers tested, including new drivers from the largest manufacturers in golf.

It may have come as a surprise to some, but anyone who has followed the career of golf inventor and PowerPod II designer Jim Flood, shouldn’t be surprised. Flood invented the graphite shaft as we know it today, founded Aldila shafts and Odyssey putters, invented the original White Hot insert and the Basakwerd Putter. Even with all of these accolades, his latest creation may be his best yet.

“The PowerPod is different…it’s different by design,” said Dean Dingman, President of Tiger Shark Golf. “We wouldn’t have entered into the driver market if we were coming out with something that looked and performed like everybody else. We are trying to advance the game within the limitations provided by the rules of the USGA and R&A. That’s why we spent the last two years working on this design with Jim.”

A PowerShelf in the back of the PowerPod II raises the center of gravity, producing low spin rates and a penetrating ball flight. The reduced toe and heel weighting allowed for 99 percent of the weight of the driver to be directly behind the impact zone. The reduced perimeter weighting also allows for the face of the golf club to be the deepest in golf, producing a larger and higher sweet spot on the face called the Pod Hot Spot that calls for teeing the ball up higher for the best results.

Said Flood, “The design originally came about because traditional driver designs had too much weight on the toe of the clubhead. Because a free flowing object that has too much weight on the toe has a propensity to slice the ball, I knew I needed to balance out the weight from heel to toe, and make the face as large as possible in order to provide golfers with a driver head that had straighter shots.”

The PowerPod has been shown to be up to seven yards longer than current models from Taylor Made and Callaway, mostly due to the increased roll it provides. The driver also bested the R9 SuperTri and Diablo Octane drivers in terms of spin rates.

The PowerPod II carries has a suggested price of $299 and is available in a 10.5 degree loft. The club comes standard with a UST V2 shaft that features a speed rated shaft system designed to fit every swing speed within the designations of L (60-70 MPH), A (70-80 MPH), R (80-90 MPH), S (90-105MPH) and X (105 + MPH).

Product of Week3/14 - Nike VR Pro Combo Irons
Product of the Week, March 15, 2011

Nike VR Pro Combo Irons

The VR Pro Combo Irons graduate from pocket-cavity long irons (3 and 4) to split-cavity middle irons (5-7) to muscleback short irons (8-PW). The longer irons are designed to provide a higher trajectory, which is attained by dropping the center of gravity lower in the clubhead to allow players to get the ball airborne faster and on a proper launch angle. The mid-irons feature perimeter weighting, with the channel found on the long irons bridging the set together and giving the split-cavity clubheads on the 5- through 7-irons more workability and feel. The set’s eight- and nine-iron and pitching wedge are traditional muscleback designs, where the center of gravity is higher in the clubhead to allow better players to work the ball effectively for greater accuracy and control. A precision forging process and a new groove design enhances consistency and distance control on all the irons. The VR Pro Combos are madewith 1025 carbon steel and feature dye-stamped USGA conforming grooves. The irons not only appeal to recreational golfers but also to the best players in the world because of their blend of game-improvement features in the long irons and a blade-style design in the scoring irons. The irons are equipped with the True Temper Dynamic Gold steel shafts.

“The VR Pro Combo irons are the most precise irons Nike has ever made.   It is combination of technology and precision craftsmanship that yields performance characteristics that work for a wide variety of player, starting with the world’s best.” – Tony Dabbs, Product Line Manager, Nike Golf

Product of Week 3/7 - Nventix Nunchuk Shaft

Nventix Nunchuk Shaft

This shaft features what the company calls, Tri-Zonal Stability (TZS) that claims to golfers unparalleled consistency, accuracy and performance. The idea is that the shaft has a very different kick point than you’re probably used to. It’s basically flexible in the middle and stiff on both ends, hence the name “Nunchuk”. It’s only offered in one flex as they claim that the different kick point and low torque design doesn’t require different flexes for different swing speeds. It's a major spin buster but keeps a good trajectory on the ball with a very tight dispersion pattern.

The Nunchuk is not to be tipped but only butt trimmed. The same shaft is used by Bob Hope winner Jhonattan Vegas and ladies! Skeptical? So were we. We tried it and watched as several others with varying swing speeds produced long and straight shots time after time. It’s manufactured by UST and is very deserving of a shot at getting in your bag. www.nventix.com

Product of Week 3/1 - TaylorMade R11™ and R11 TP Driver

TaylorMade R11™ and R11 TP Driver

The R11 driver incorporates TaylorMade’s 3D Tuning system that allows the player to adjust the loft, face angle and flight path. “This gives golfers the ability to adjust their driver to fit their individual needs with even greater precision," says Dr. Benoit Vincent, TaylorMade's chief technology officer.

The unique 3D Tuning system incorporates 2 of TaylorMade’s tour proven technologies along with a brand new innovation that allows for the face angle to be adjusted independently of the loft.

Flight Control Technology (FCT), first appeared on the company’s R9 series, allows the golfer to adjust the loft in order to increase or decrease the launch angle and spin rate to increase distance. Moveable Weight Technology (MWT), an innovation first seen in TaylorMade’s r7 series, adjusts the clubhead’s center of gravity to promote a draw, fade or neutral ball flight. The 3rd dimension of tuning is the Adjustable Sole Plate (ASP) that allows you to adjust the face angle, independently of the loft, to attain the player’s desired look at address.

When a player changes a clubhead's loft they also change the face angle, i.e. increase loft and the face angle closes, decrease loft and the face angle opens. The Adjustable Sole Plate solves this problem. The ASP provides ±2 degrees of face angle change. The player can create three lofts with the same face angle, or can further accentuate a face angle or counter a negative face angle. Plus, the combination of ASP and FCT effectively doubles the range of face angle for the club for ±2 degrees to ±4 degrees.

Altogether these 3 dimensions of tuning, ASP, FCT and MWT, give golfers no fewer than 48 ways to set up the clubhead to promote up to 100 yards of side-to-side trajectory adjustment, the most of any driver in existence.

The R11’s new, “modern-classical” clubhead shape is intended to suit the eye of better players, while still providing forgiveness and confidence for average players. The shape presents a more contemporary appearance than traditional drivers, and is slightly triangular to create a modern yet classical address silhouette. The triangular shape creates more inertia and a deeper back center of gravity position for greater stability and forgiveness.

Oh, did we mention the color?

At 440cc, the R11 appears slightly larger due to its white crown color. The white crown color and black PVD face provides optimum contrast against the ground to make the R11 easier to aim. This advantage is even more pronounced in lower light, such as when the tee box is in shade or shadow, on overcast days or when the sun is low in the morning and in the evening. The crown color also eliminates high-intensity "hot spots" caused by reflected sunlight that afflicts gloss-finish metal woods.

The R11 driver measures 45.75-inches in length and is equipped standard with Fujikura’s new Blur 60-gram shaft offered in four flexes-- X, S, R, M. It is available in two “starting point” lofts, 9 degrees and 10.5 degrees. There is also a TP edition that comes with a Fujikura Blur TP shaft as well as the option of 19 additional shaft choices.

Price: $399 for R11, $499 for R11 TP.

Product of Week 2/15 - Warrior Tomahawk Hybrid

Warrior Tomahawk Hybrid

Warrior’s Custom Golf is sending its new 19-degree Tomahawk Hybrid Iron free to a select number of golfers in order to obtain consumer feedback prior to the club’s introduction to the general public. The company says the club has a suggested retail price of $249.99, but Warrior, for a limited time, will send a few thousand of the Tomahawk Hybrid Irons to consumers for free in exchange for a performance evaluation that will help the company promote and better their products. Warrior’s new custom hybrids essentially combine the best characteristics of a wood and an iron in one golf club. Part iron, part wood, they combine fairway wood distance with the control and accuracy of an iron. The company’s engineers developed “Mass-Transfer Technology,” which expands the sweet spot by pulling weight away from the club face and redistributing it to selected areas around the perimeter of the club head. While thesweet spot in most golf clubs issomewhere in the center of the club face, Warrior’s new hybrids feel solid no matter where the user hits the ball. Combined with a low center of gravity, providing a higher moment of inertia means greater distance and more accuracy making them extremely forgiving, says the company.

To participate in Warrior’s free custom hybrid offer go to www.warriorcustomgolf.com or contact one of their club fitters at 1-800-600-5113 and mention this story.

Product of Week 2/8 - TaylorMade Burner Tour Golf Ball

TaylorMade Burner Tour Golf Ball

The next-generation Burner Tour golf ball is designed to deliver maximum distance and exceptional feel to a broad range of player types. The Burner Tour’s soft and thin cover promotes softer feel, higher spin and increased control. To achieve a significant improvement in greenside spin and performance in the Burner Tour, the company employed the softest and thinnest two-piece cover of any TaylorMade golf ball. With the new Burner, the goal was to limit driver-spin and promote maximum carry, which could only be accomplished by combining a soft core and slightly firmer cover. The Burner Tour golf ball incorporates TaylorMade’s proprietary REACT Core design to promote exceptionally fast ball speed while maintaining soft performance, with the Burner Tour employing a soft core compression of 45. In addition, the Burner Tour's thinner and softer cover reduces its overall compression to deliver incredibly soft feel and added spin around the green. TaylorMade’s Low-Drag Performance (LDP) aerodynamics have been incorporated into the premium 342 LDP dimple pattern used on the Burner Tour, which promotes improved lift for more distance. The Burner Tour’s Iothane 57D cover is exceptionally soft and resilient, while also offering outstanding durability and shear-resistance.

Product of Week 2/1 - SeeMore Black Satin Si4

SeeMore Black Satin Si4

The Black Satin Si4 offers SeeMore’s new RST2 technology, which includes the company’s original RifleScope Technology (RST), in a classic hosel-style blade. The putter head features thermoplastic face insert for a softer feel and a slightly lower rebound characteristic preferred by some players. The RST2 alignment system is housed on the top of the hosel versus the original RST system, which is found on the top heel section of the putter. The two white lines on top of the hosel are milled perfectly parallel to the face of the putter, creating a "gun sight" effect and assuring that the clubhead is square to the intended target line when the white lines are visible and the signature red dot is hidden. The golfer will thus enjoy a much greater probability of making a consistent stroke, leading to more made putts and lower scores. The SiSeries putters feature precision cast 303 stainless steel heads with soft thermo plastic urethane (TPU) face inserts, as well as an expanded sweet spot with enhanced perimeter weighting and a softer feel and slighter less rebound for those preferring the performance of a Tour level elastomer insert. SiSeries putters offer a range of shape and design options to meet every golfer's needs within a line that offers both value and performance.

Product of Week 12/7 - Callaway Diablo Octane

Callaway Diablo Octane Driver

Callaway’s new Diablo Octane driver is the first club to have a clubhead made with forged composite, a revolutionary material that is lighter and stronger than titanium. Callaway believes it has designed the next development in driver technology--a lighter, stronger, and more precise club. Forged composite is one-third the density of titanium, yet features a greater load carrying capacity per unit mass in bending. The Diablo Octane’s 10 million turbostratic fibers are precisely forged with six tons of force during a proprietary design process. This creates ultra-light, thin-walled components for lower total head weight and optimized mass properties. Callaway engineers then combine the lighter, more efficient clubhead with a longer shaft to increase head speed in the downswing and power at impact for longer distances and uncompromised accuracy. Callaway’s Diablo Octane powers drives beyond those of its all-titanium predecessor by an average distance of eight yards. Also, a proprietary hyperbolic shape and chemical milling process provides precision thickness control across the clubface, producing a larger sweet spot and improved impact efficiency to produce consistently high ball speeds forlong distance, even on off-center hits. The new driver offers improveddistribution of mass within the clubhead when compared with drivers featuring an all-titanium construction; lower total head weight and optimized mass properties; a lighter, more efficient clubhead combined with a longer shaft to increase head speed in the downswing and power at impact for longer distances and uncompromised accuracy.

“The Diablo Octane Driver is configured to deliver unmatched power and precision through superior design, construction and advanced materials” says Dr. Alan Hocknell, Sr. Vice President, Research and Development, Callaway Golf.

Titleist 910 Driver

The 910 series’ interchangeable designs mean shafts can be changed quickly with a torque wrench, and clubheads can be adjusted just as easily for face angle, lie and effective playing loft. The D2 has a slightly lower and deeper center of gravity than the D3, which should translate into somewhat straighter and higher tee shots. Meanwhile, the D3 is designed to produce a more boring trajectory with some additional roll. Both drivers have a thinner and lighter crown than the 909 series, lowering the center of gravity. A 7-gram weight on the sole of the clubs is interchangeable, with heavier and lighter weights available. Standard face angle for both drivers is a half-degree open, although this can be altered in a range from 11⁄2 degrees open to 11⁄2 degrees closed. In the process of configuring the clubface to the left or right, the effective playing loft changes as much as 21⁄4 degrees.

Product of Week 11/4 - TaylorMade Burner 2.0 Irons

TaylorMade Burner® 2.0 Irons

The Burner 2.0 is engineered to combine Burner distance plus more feel and playability. Weight distribution varies in every Burner 2.0 clubhead to improve long-, middle- and short-iron ball flight. In the long-irons, weight has been shifted toward the back of the head, to promote easy launch, and toward the toe and heel, to promote stability and forgiveness. In the middle-irons, weight is distributed more evenly and slightly higher to promote workability and forgiveness. In the short-irons, weight is positioned even higher, to promote a lower, controllable ball flight, and centered, to promote increased clubhead control. The CG in the short-irons is closer to the face, similar to a blade, to increase feel and to promote lower flight. Additionally, every individual Burner 2.0 iron boasts a different face thickness. The thinnestand fastest faces are in the long-irons, with the face in each successive iron growing thicker down through the middle- and short-irons. The thinner face, the higher the COR to promote more ball speed and distance; the thicker the face, the greater the feel. Burner 2.0 irons are equipped with a new, flight-control shaft design in 85-gram steel or 65-gram graphite.

SS Wedge by F2 Golf
Product of the Week, February 15, 2011

SS Wedge by F2 Golf

The New F2 SS Wedge’s revolutionary design features the unique performance characteristics of the original F2 wedge, the only “shank proof” wedge on the market. The new “dog leg” hosel has the appearance of any standard wedge when looking down at the club from the address position. By moving the weight out of the hosel, the MOI is raised making it more stable and forgiving. By moving the hosel out of the way at impact decreases the drag through the rough, sand or any other lie. No hosel means easier to hit, more forgiving and more versatile

The new F2 SS Wedge design makes it a lot easier to hit a shot from anytypelie and not worry about a shank, the looks of this new wedge at address looks like any traditional wedge, but with advanced hosel technology and larger, moreforgiving face area.

The F2 SS Wedge is available now in cavity backmodels in 52, 56, 60 and 64 degrees. The cavity back SS wedges are priced at $99.99 each.

Taylormade R11 Irons
Product of the Week, November 4, 2011

TaylorMade R11 Irons

Last year at this time TaylorMade raised the ante with the Burner 2.0 iron. The R11 shares the best of both worlds with the company’s forged Tour Preferred line and the powerful Burner 2.0. Its Burner 2.0 heritage is apparent in its ultra-thin face thickness that promotes faster ball speed and distance and Inverted Cone Technology that helps preserve that distance on off-center hits. The progressive top line thickness and strong lofts produce comparable launch, ball flight and length to the Burner 2.0, as well as the consistent distance gaps between each club.

The Tour Preferred bloodline is reflected in the precision weight port system that ensures precise swingweights while making sure that each club’s center of gravity is right in line with the sweet spot. The “multi-functional” sole increases playability from a variety of lies making these very playable for a wide range of skill levels. The R11 has a soft feel and produces a more “muted” sound at impact reflective of its forged Tour Preferred brethren. Combining great feel with incredible yet consistent distances makes the R11 an iron to be sure to have on your “must try” list. Make no mistake; the R11 is indeed a game improvement club with the capability to shape and flight shots that will please even the most highly skilled player.

Mizuno MP-59 Irons
Product of the Week, October 17, 2011

Mizuno MP 59 Irons

When you think of Mizuno, you think of quality forged irons. The new MP-59 is indeed another example of this well earned reputation but with a titanium twist. Last season’s MP-58 were the first irons released with a feature that Mizuno calls Ti Muscle. But with the release of the new MP-59 irons, Mizuno uses titanium for a completely different purpose—forgiveness. The MP-59 is actually a bit smaller than its predecessor yet Mizuno claims the clubs have a sweet spot that is 5 percent larger. With all this talk of forgiveness, make no mistake this is not a “game improvement” iron. Like the entire MP iron series, the MP-59 has very little offset and a thin top line making this indeed a great choice for the skilled player. The MP-59 will come standard with True Temper’s Dynamic Gold shaft however a plethora of tour quality shafts are offered as custom options.

Tour Edge XCG5 Driver
Product of the Week, October 24, 2011

Tour Edge XCG5 Driver

The Tour Edge XCG5 driver features a combo‐brazing process to join the titanium face and body to an ultra‐thin beta titanium crown. The XCG5’s special beta titanium crown material is ultra‐thin and lighter than the previous carbon crown found in the XCG4. This material dramatically improves sound while allowing weight to be added to the rear of the sole via the Six‐Point Perimeter Weighting System. This system lowers the center of gravity and moves it deeper and further back in the sole for longer more forgiving drives.

To maximize spring‐like effect, Tour Edge increased the XCG5’s face sizeby 12% over previous models. The Boomerang face offers multiple levels of variable face thickness that supercharge the rebound effect from more points on the face. By thinning and thickening the face, the v‐shaped boomerangs allow for the maximum elongation of the titanium for enhanced feel and launch.

Power is also enhanced by generating greater swing speed. The aerodynamic shape and visibly sloped crown and sole reduce drag and improve airflow for enhanced swing speed.

The Exotics XCG5 driver is guaranteed longer than your current driver. If it is not longer than your current driver, the club can be returned under Tour Edge’s 30‐day Play Guarantee for a store credit or refund depending on the retailer’s policy. All three versions have a suggested retail of $329.

Titleist Vokey Design SM4 Wedges
Product of the Week, November 21, 2011

Titleist Vokey Design SM4 Wedges

The new Vokey Design SM4 wedges feature 17 precise, individually cut grooves that maximize groove geometry and push groove edge radius to the conforming limits. SM4 wedges feature a new shape inspired by Bob Vokey’s original 200 series, with twenty-one loft and bounce combinations and five different sole grinds that Vokey developed through his research and work with some of the best players in the world. Like their Spin Milled predecessors, the new Vokey Design SM4 wedges are made from soft 8620 carbon steel and feature Titleist’s Spin Milled technology. Model changes to the SM4 line include a new 46-degree pitching wedge and higher bounce models in lofts of 48, 50 and 52 degrees. Ten models, ranging from 54 to 64 degrees, will now be offered with specialty sole grinds that Vokey developed on Tour.

The SM4 wedges have a CNC-machined face and precisely cut groove geometry. The face surface is also machined with a series of milled micro edges resulting in greater surface roughness for improved spin on partial shots versus a polished wedge face. They are available November in 3 finishes, Tour Chrome, Black Nickel and Oil Can in both left and right handed.

STX SS2 Putter
Product of the Week, August 29, 2011

STX SS2 Putter

The new STX SS2 Putter resembles its predecessor, the Sync Tour Mallet. As it is a contemporary mallet that features the signature STX bullet back design which distributes optimum weight directly behind the sweet spot. This crucial element is why the Sync Tour Mallet was a favorite on the PGA Tour. It is proven to keep any stroke on line with extraordinary balance and unforgettable feel.

What differentiates the new STX SS2 from the original is its uniquely designed heel-toe element that increases the M.O.I. The modern mallet head size is considerably smaller but weighs in heavier at 355 grams. A standard feature in the Sync Series is the step-less center shaft. On the STX SS2 Putter, it is positioned directly in the center for precision putting.

STX putters have been used to capture twelve PGA Tour events and one major from 1995 to 2005. Its success can be directly attributed to the company’s Soft Insert Technology called “F.E.E.L.” – Friction Enhancing Elastomer Layer. This patented STX technology dramatically increases the coefficient of friction to put a greater amount of topspin on the ball and keep your putts on line.

CaddyTrek Makes Walking the Golf Course Fun

CaddyTrek, a new robotic golf trolley that follows the golfer around the course faithfully, is set to revolutionize the golf world.
FTR Products, makers of the CaddyTrek, claims the product is the most compact and lightest-powered golf trolley in the world. When folded, CaddyTrek can be handled with ease, similar to carry-on luggage.
The CaddyTrek sells for $1,595 and the company is currently running a Holiday/Early Bird Special where consumers can purchase the product for the reduced rate of $1,395 through Jan. 31 of 2012.
Although the numerous cardiovascular health benefits of walking the golf course are widely known, the four- or five-hour trek is not easy for everyone. CaddyTrek relieves the stress of carrying your own bag, having to ride in a golf cart, or paying someone to carry your clubs.
“Response from consumers has been phenomenal,” said Lee Yu, in charge of marketing for the company. “People love the `follow’ feature, as it makes them completely hands-free on the golf course. They also love the compact folded size and the light weight, as it makes the storing and transporting in and out of the vehicle trunk easy. Some users are extremely impressed by the powerful hill climbing capability and the lightweight, long-lasting lithium ion battery.”
CaddyTrek is manufactured in Shanghai, China and began shipping in January.

FTR products are designed by the firm’s CEO and Chief Designer, Dr. Chung-Hsin Lee. Born in China and educated both in Taiwan and the U.S., Dr. Lee has a variety of training and discipline in physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and business.
