I f you like your golf course challenging and unique, maybe even a one-of-kind experience, then you’ve simply got to check out Twisted Dune Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, N.J.
Built to offer both area golf enthusiasts and those vacationing in the South Jersey shore area a very different playing experience, Twisted Dune has never failed to impress and delight since it opened a decade ago.
The layout, a part of the Empire Golf cache that includes some of the finest private and semi-private layouts on the Northeast, Twisted Dune Golf Club is a quite remarkable course that offers subtlety-rolling fairways that sit amid jagged dunes. With the dunes, sand and water everywhere and nary a tree to be seen one can easily imagine he or she is in Scotland or Ireland instead of South Jersey.
Designer Archie Struthers moved two million cubic yards of earth to bring this remarkable course to life! The course traverses deep ravines, towering grass-covered hills and has well over 100 sand traps and bunkers. Rather wide fairways and expansive greens allow players of all levels to keep the ball in play and enjoy their rounds.
“We’re having a steady season so far,” said Scott Dunn, general manager and head professional at the club. “We are offering a few more specials then in years past due to the economic times we are in.”
Those specials include what the club calls Early Bird, Mid-Week, Super Twilight and Sunday Afternoon Shobbie. Details on each can be found on the club’s website located at the bottom of this story.
Dunn said Twisted Dune Golf Club continues to attract a loyal following from locals, as well as those visiting the area for the first time.
“Our club is special due to the fact that we are a links style course in southern New Jersey, where most of the layouts are of the parkland variety. We have always been ranked very high in the state for daily fee courses, and Golfweek Magazine has had us in the top five since 2001.”
This pleasingly eclectic track plays over 7,200 yards from the tips and features some of the most interesting holes you will find in The Garden State. A real nice bonus is that the club is located only a few miles from the Atlantic City Boardwalk and its plethora of casinos, hotels and restaurants.
The course’s ninth hole concludes a special outward nine. The 585-yard par-five has water guarding the left side of the green, which makes even short approach shots dicey. Taking fairway wood out the bag and trying to get close or onto the putting green in two is a test that only the most accomplished players should attempt.
The 198-yard par-three 13th is a visually impressive hole, playing slightly downhill, with water guarding three sides of the putting surface. It’s a very intimidating tee shot that can make the best players pause and consider the consequences of a poorly played mid- or long-iron
And the par-three 16th hole is considered the layout’s signature hole. Depending upon which way the wind is blowing, the 217-yard 16th can play anywhere from a six-iron to a three-wood. Reaching the green in regulation is a nice way to build up confidence for a strong finish to your round.
Weekday rates at Twisted Dune until Sept. 6 are $89 for non-members and $76 for members Monday through Thursday, and $105 for non-members and $95 for members Friday through Sunday.
Golf instruction at the club is offered through MC’s Golf Academy.
