New Golf Ball Combines Distance with Feel

Nike had help from a very notable person during the design phase for its One Platinum golf ball.

"The Man," yep, Tiger Woods, worked closely with Rock Ishii, Nike Golf's director of product development, as the ball was being ramped up late last year.
Woods, the world’s number one player and holder of two Majors this year, was crushing golf balls with his 460cc Nike Ignite driver. But in Ishii's option, Woods could become more efficient and longer with a higher trajectory ball. The task then was then to create a ball that was longer and able to be controlled with a larger headed driver without losing spin performance around the green.
The result? The Nike One Platinum.

Woods started playing a prototype of the One Platinum at this year's Mercedes Championships in January and the result has been nothing short of amazing, even for arguably the greatest golfer of all time. With the One Platinum added to his arsenal, Woods was averaging 305 yards off the tee and was hitting 74 percent of the greens in regulation, the latter stat third on this year PGA Tour stats at one point. He used the ball in winning The Masters (how can we ever forget it dropping nicely into the cup at number 16) and the British Open, and when he finished second at the U.S. Open.

"I think the ball captured what everyone is looking for," said Woods to Pub Links Golfer Magazine earlier this year. "Everyone is trying to hit it further, but the ball also spins around the greens. I have gained an extra dimension to my short game. All of the golf balls I'd played previously seemed too flat sometimes. They would take a big hop before spinning. This golf ball will launch a little bit higher and still have the same spin."

Woods called his work with Ishii "eye-opening."  He said, "I never really knew the ball technology, the dynamics of the ball, the mantle, the core, the cover, the different thickness. I think the relationship between Rock and me is very symbiotic because we can kind of read each other. We can hit a shot with a certain ball and it's like, yeah, that’s it."

The Nike One Platinum, like the Nike One Black and Gold models, has been receiving rave reviews from average players to more accomplished golfers. The key to the design of the ball is a Progressive Density Core with a soft center and a progressively harder outer shell. This provides lower spin off the tee even with the soft cover, similar to the One Black, which the company claims is the longest ball on Tour.

And similar to the Nike One Gold, the One Platinum is comprised of three layers, or covers, beyond the core. Each cover of the One Platinum has its own job to do, says the company. The inner cover is designed to reduce spin off the driver, the middle cover provides superb mid-iron control, and the outer cover, which is softer than the Nike One Gold, gives enhanced feel around the green.
The outer cover of the One Platinum features Nike's Golf’s proprietary 408-dimple pattern, the same one used on the One Black. This pattern promotes a higher trajectory and a more penetrating ball flight, making the ball descend at a less steep angle, which promotes more distance and roll, says Nike.

The company says the One Platinum is not designed exclusively for drivers over 400cc in head size, and that its advantages will match any combination of clubs.
