The Links at Outlook

Boston-area golfers looking for a bit of the old country when they tee off don’t have to head across the ocean to the courses that line the coast of Scotland. Just over an hour’s drive from Boston lies The Links at Outlook in South Berwick, ME and it is simply a true gem. The Brian Silva-designed course offers one the chance to play a Scottish style links course and still be home for the evening news.
In a nod to the legendary Scottish courses, Silva
incorporated what he calls random bunkering into his design to make the player think about each shot. The course is mostly open to the elements, with each hole posing its own set of problems, whether they are fairway bunkers, sloping greens, or deep rough off the fairways.
The undulating bent grass fairways and greens covers what used to be the Outlook Farm. Silva made optimal use of the natural landscape to create a true test of the game, while reminding players of the courses where the game was born.

While not overly long--only 6,423 from the back tees--The Links at Outlook can play difficult in windy conditions. None of the par 4’s on the back side measure over 388 yards. But Silva placed a premium on accuracy off the tee and proper club selection on approach shots in order to stay out of trouble.
If the links style design doesn’t remind you of golf in the British Isles, the fescue- lined bunkers and ocean breezes will. The course offers two unique looks as the first 11 holes have more of the links design. Once through the tunnel, the last 7 holes offer a more New England feel complete with elevated shots up mountains and  spectacular views.
The toughest hole on the course is the 451-yard par-four second. And the other three of the first four holes, two par-5’s and a 206-yard par 3, also test the player right out of the box
Once your final putt lands in the 18th hole, a cold
beverage awaits. While arguing over scores with that post round drink, take in the beauty that is one of Maine’s finest catering facilities. In 2007, the Red Barn at Outlook was completed, offering not only the finest in event planning, but a great place for corporate outings.
The Red Barn hosts numerous weddings throughout the year, offering both an indoor and an outdoor venue for the ceremony. Up to 250 guests can be accommodated and that expands to 500 when the
veranda is included. The post and beam construction is a nod to the past but the Red Barn is thoroughly modern.
“We pride ourselves on being a family owned facility and
offering a fair value for the golfer. We are a favorite among vacationers and locals alike and we feel that despite the fact that our prices are a bit lower than our  competitors, our conditions and amenities are much greater,” said Jeff Maldonis, General Manager of the Links at Outlook.
