Improve your Grip By Tony Lake
Untitled Document

The interface with which golfers grip the club is often overlooked. An upgrade to your grips can give your current set of clubs that new feel and confidence to improve your game this season. When players consider their grip they often only think of how their hands are placed on the club prior to each shot. In reality, the rubber sleeve that covers the golf shaft is the only interface between their body and the club they use to strike the ball. Worn, cracked grips can be slick and force an increase in grip pressure to compensate. This increase in grip pressure surely has an adverse impact on the rotation of the clubface through the hitting zone, corresponding to a loss of club head speed and ultimately a loss of distance with each swing.

Each spring when you pull your clubs from storage, evaluate the condition of the grips and determine if you want to replace them. Notice the difference in the feel of the grips from the club you choose most often to the club in your bag that rarely is used. Grip materials breakdown from exposure to extreme temperature changes, perspiration, dust, and dirt. Dry cracked grips require more grip pressure to maintain control leading to an adverse impact on dynamic performance. Consult your local club professional or golf retailer and replace the grips at least once a year depending on the amount of golf you play.
