Set-up and Turn for Better Golf By Tom Rosati, Golf Instruction

I’d like to feature one of my students and illustrate a tip that can help you play better golf.

My featured student is Ray Macaluso.  Last year Ray came to me with a short choppy swing that would produce dead pulls and weak fades. His swing was so fast I couldn’t tell if he was a golfer or Zorro.  His set up was so hunched over that he resembled an armadillo.

The transformation started with an improved, more upright set-up so his shoulders were over his toes (figure 1). This allowed Ray to turn his shoulders another 15 degrees. The drill we used to accomplish this was to drop a club on the ground at the instep of your left heel (figure 2). Start your swing by pushing the club back slowly with your left shoulder going across your chest behind the ball. If done correctly your left shoulder and your head would be over the club on the ground at the top of the backswing (figure 3). By turning behind the ball Ray was able to create a shallower down-swing plane (figure 4). To complete the transformation I fitted Ray with a new set of Taylormade XD Burner irons and a Burner driver.

Ray is now one of our regular winners in the tournament club series and a much happier golfer.
