Owner Mark Ridder wants to make sure the word is out that Waverly Oaks Golf Club in Plymouth, Ma. is open for the season and still features some of the best conditions and service you’ll find anywhere on the South Shore.
This will likely be Waverly Oaks GC’s last year of existence, as a movie studio is purchasing the property. Plans are for an elaborate operation to be built on land where the course now sits, including a number of sets, sound stages, hotels, restaurants and housing for some 2,000 employees and those associated with television and movie productions that will be filmed there. Although the sale is not final, Plymouth Rock Studios has placed a seven figure non-refundable deposit on the 240-acre property and is currently working on obtaining the needed permits in order to conclude the purchase and begin construction.
Ridder dispelled the notion going around that the club will not be open this year, or at least not operating on all cylinders.
“Waverly’s commitment to providing outstanding conditions, service and attention to detail is the basic principle Waverly was founded and built upon, and we aren’t going to jeopardize those standards.”
“We opened for the season in the middle of March and we have been very busy so far,” adds Ridder, who opened the daily fee facility 12 years ago. “Waverly was founded on providing private club conditions and service without having to join a private club. We are excited about this year because we feel Waverly provides tremendous value (in-season $75 for 18 and a cart on weekdays and $95 for 18 on Fri.-Sat.-Sun.) as compared to our competition. Obviously, we have mixed emotions about selling. But we are expecting a busy year, with the trend that many private club members don’t have the time to get their value out of their private club membership and are relinquishing their memberships. We are committed to maintaining the level of service and golf course quality that our golf, corporate and wedding guests have come to expect since we opened.
Ridder, who, along with his staff will join the new operation once it becomes operational, says, “This is a special piece of land that comes along maybe once in a lifetime. It’s tough to part with the golf course because my father and I built Waverly ourselves, all in house with all our own employees. But the decision to sell provides our families and employees with an exciting opportunity to be involved with a very special project and an outstanding opportunity for the community and entire South Shore because of the jobs and taxes the studio will generate.”
Waverly Oaks offers a challenging yet approachable routing that will test you but won’t beat you up.
The best hole the front side might be the 529-yard, par-five fourth, which has water guarding the green, making it risky to go for the putting surface in two.
Much of the beef on the layout comes from its very good par-threes, three of which play over 207 yards, including the 234-yard third and the 251-yard 17th, with the latter being perhaps the most difficult short hole in the region. It demands a lusty tee shot over a waste area and a yawning bunker that sits some 15 feet below the putting surface.
In fact, the 17th is the culmination of a three-hole stretch that will test even the best players. The challenge begins with the demanding 474-yard par-four 15th and moves to monstrous, 636-yard par-five 16th before concluding at the 17th. Come through this trio of holes even par and can brag about it in the comfortable clubhouse after your round.
Waverly Oaks’ 18-hole course plays around 7,100 yards from the tips but there are four other sets of tees.
The club also offers a neat Challenger Course, which is a great spot for beginners and high-handicappers to have some fun. The layout plays only 2,264 yards from the back and is a par-33. Conditions on the Challenger track are just as good as on the Championship Course.
