Tower Ridge CC in Avon CT Is a Unique Test of Golf
It took a while for the word to get around, but Connecticut golfers have found out about Tower Ridge Country Club in Simsbury.
The club opened for public play two seasons ago and those who haven’t tested Tower Ridge, which sits below the famed Heublein Tower, are in for a great treat. The course is one of the most unique layouts in the state, with a feel more like that of a northern New England track. The course has several dramatic elevation changes as it winds up and down steep hills, with fabulous views and challenging shots.

After a journey along the Farmington River valley for the first three holes, one of which is a super 185-yard par-three across water, the remaining holes on the front side play up and then down a steep cliff.
The fourth hole is a scenic, 385-yard par-four that demands an accurate tee shot to find a narrow landing area that sits between a pond and a wetland area. The approach is to an elevated green with the flag partially hidden from sight.
Number eight is a massive, 244-yard par-three that plays downhill, and the ninth is a 375-yard par-four that begins from an elevated tee with the drive sailing down into the fairway below. The views from holes five through nine are among the best in Connecticut.
The back nine also is a mix of valley and cliffside holes. Both the 480-yard 10th and 500-yard 14th are great par-fives that play uphill. The 400-yard par-four 15th doglegs severely to the right at the 150-yard marker, making a long, slightly faded tee shot a must to have an unfettered approach to a green that sits below the fairway.
The 18th, a 374-yard par-four, has an open fairway landing area, but demands an approach across a pond to the putting surface, which sits below a clubhouse terrace. It’s a superb finishing hole and birdie here might get and round of applause from those sitting on the deck overlooking the green.
Golf professional Tony Roberto is in his first year at the facility and welcomes players of all abilities to test out this quite different and fun test of golf., 860-651-9393
