POCONO SPOTLIGHT - Tamiment Golf Club

Tamiment Golf Club Well Worth the Drive
It’s hard to beat this offer.
How about 18 holes of golf and a cart Monday through Friday for $90 a foursome? Yep, you read it right. And you get a great course to play on top of the incredibly reasonable price.
That’s the offer this fall at Tamiment Golf Club in Bushkill Falls, Pa., a classic Robert Trent Jones, Sr. design nestled in the sweet, rolling hills of the Poconos.

“It really is a great offer,” says Michael Maher, superintendent at the club. “On Saturday and Sunday golfers can play 18 with a cart for only $40 apiece. It’s all about trying to increase rounds and getting new business.”

Local and area golfers have known for quite some time about the special treat that awaits at Tamiment, which was established in 1947.

Jones imbued Tamiment with his trademark classic design elements, such as tree lined fairways, undulating greens and strategically placed bunkers. This is a golf course that was built before the modern craze for island greens, railroad ties surrounding bunkers and putting surfaces and severe mounding off the fairways.

Tamiment is a course that is not cluttered by an undue amount of hazards. But it demands a well thought out approach off the tees and to the greens. Water comes into play on five holes and there are 43 bunkers scattered about the layout. The beautiful views of the surrounding countryside only compliment the experience of a round at Tamiment.

Maher said the club will undertake a significant project this fall aimed at upgrading the course’s bunkering system and greens. A new clubhouse has also been proposed for the facility.

Tamiment came under new ownership in March of 2005 when the golf course and surrounding residential area was purchased by Wolfington Companies, LLC. The firm is developing a master plan for the property that will create what it believes will be a new and prestigious community.

Tamiment plays almost 7,000 yards from the tips and has three other sets of tees to accommodate players of every skill level. The slopes of 127 and 126 from the second and third tees down respectively give an indication of the eminent playability of the track.

There is a pleasing mix of holes here, from drivable par-fours and reachable-in-two par-fives to beefy four pars and long par-threes.

The second hole is a par-three that measures only 130 yards from the tips. But Jones followed that up with a sequence of holes that are rather lengthy and that offer stunning views of the Poconos. The sixth is a monstrous, 456-yard par-four that plays up to an elevated green.

The 13th hole is a 205-yard par-three that rises slightly to the putting surface and is nestled in the manner of the 13th hole at Muirfield, the Scottish seaside inks.

The 16th is a testy, 235-yard par-three that plays downhill, and the 17th is a 580-yard par-five that starts from an elevated tee and is framed by woods on both sides all the way to the green.
Number 18 is a pleasing finish. The 427-yard par-four plays downhill from the tee into a valley and then uphill to the green. The putting surface is well guarded by bunkers and finding it and making par will put a capper on a great day of golf.

Tamiment has an arrangement with the nearby Pocmont Resort that features stay and play packages that include accommodations, breakfast and dinner daily, 18 holes with cart, preferred tee times, Wi-Fi Internet access, and unlimited access to the resort’s amenities and recreational facilities.
