One of the sweetest corners of the world for golfers from New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania is the Catskill region of the Keystone State.
There are any number of fabulous and storied golf resorts located in this area. One of the best, Fernwood Hotel and Resort, recently underwent a bit of a facelift that has brought it to the forefront in the pantheon of golf destinations in this special area.
The resort’s par-71 golf course began the 2007 season with improvements that included a rebuilding of its bunkers, the construction of a new tee box on hole 13 that added 40 yards, and a new forward tee box on number 17.
“The improvements only make a great thing even better,” said Rich Millard, Fernwood’s golf professional. “We are always looking for ways to better the quality of play, and at the close of last season the course was in excellent shape, thanks to the efforts of our golf course superintendent Jeff Lipics.”
The golf course is one of the jewels in Fernwood’s crown. It is well known for its beautiful setting and ambles easily over rolling hills. It’s only a little over 6,100 yards from the tips, but several doglegs and a few elevated greens make proper club selection and sound course management a must to score well.
For a short course, Fernwood has several long, difficult par-threes; the ninth, 12th and 16th all measure 200 yards or more from the back markers. On the other hand there are several short par-fours that dare the big hitter to try and reach with driver off the tee. The par-fives range from the short 440-yard 17th, a severe dogleg left, to the monstrous 600-yard sixth.
But the Fernwood Resort is more than great golf. It’s an all-inclusive getaway that has lots to do for every member of the family.
“We have almost 450 acres here,” said Gina Bertucci, vice president of marketing and one of the owners of this wonderful property, “with villas, 212 hotel rooms, four themed restaurants, an events center and entertainment and daily activities during the summer. We’re a great place for families that have one or two golfers and other family members who may want to do other things, like sightsee and shop in the outlets. Plus, we are located in a beautiful part of the state.”
Fernwood is on Route 209 in Bushkill, just minutes from the Delaware Water Gap adjacent to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and close to the Mountain Laurel Center for the Performing Arts. The popular Crossing Premium Outlets and Bushkill Falls are near by.
Bertucci said the resort has introduced several popular golf packages that include either villa or hotel room accommodations and two rounds of golf for each night stayed per room.
“Our golfers want it to be easy to make a reservation and a tee time with one call to our reservation specialists,” she said. “They can do both for as little as $165 a night midweek in a hotel room that sleeps two. That makes it only $82.50 per person, which includes greens fees and a golf cart.”
She added, “Whether you just want to sit by the pool and relax after a round of golf, have a nice dinner and a show, canoe through the National Park, or shop, we make it easy and affordable with our special packages.”
There are also junior golf clinics for the youngsters to take advantage of during the summer.Fernwood Hotel and ResortBushkill, Pa.570-588-6661www.fernwoodhotel.com
