Meet Carolee Mancuso,
New EWGA LI Board Member

There’s a new treasurer on the board of the Long Island Chapter of EWGA. Meet Carolee Mancuso, a CPA from Demasco, Sena & Jahelka, LLP.  Fortunately for EWGA, Carolee got involved through some women who were already involved and playing in EWGA leagues.  She is now taking on the responsibility of treasurer as a way to increase her involvement in EWGA.

Carolee has always been a sports enthusiast and in 1992 her interest in golf was piqued when she accompanied her husband to the driving range. Shortly after that trip, they purchased a condo on a nine-hole course.  This gave Carolee an open invitation to really get out there and play—and that’s just what she did. In addition to the enjoyment of the sport, she knows first hand that it has opened opportunities in her professional life, which she’s convinced she would have otherwise missed out on. “As a member of EWGA, I meet so many new friends and I have become involved in something I enjoy outside of work,” she happily added.

While Carolee has always enjoyed sports (she prefers participating to watching), she acknowledges that golf has allowed her to continue to participate and enjoy the game at her own pace. “Another bonus,” she adds, “is that it also allows me to incorporate golf, friends, and my love of travel. What could be better?”

Asked if she had any advice for women thinking about taking up golf, or for new EWGA members, her immediate response was, “Go out there and have fun. Don’t take the game too seriously and get involved. Make new friends!”

Meet Suzanne Garcia,
New EWGA LI Board Member

Ask new Rules & Handicap Chair Suzanne Garcia how to relieve tension when you’re attending law school and she’ll tell you to start playing pitch-and-putt. That’s what she did and it worked. She started playing golf in 1996 and today maintains a 14.5 handicap, which is impressive enough until you learn that golf is the first sport Suzanne has ever played. On a more personal note, she confides, “Golf has given me the opportunity to see myself succeed in an athletic endeavor. It has boosted my self-confidence and opened up a whole new world in terms of sports, friends, success, and confidence.”

This whole new world for Suzanne also includes the ongoing self-challenges, like breaking 80 in the Bahamas on her way to the airport. (Obviously for Suzanne, there’s always enough time for another round of golf.) Being outside is another one of Suzanne’s top reasons for playing golf. Ask the goose she hit with a grounded line drive at Christopher Morley Park, however, or the squirrel that limped out of the woods as a result of her partner’s shank, and they probably wouldn’t be so enthusiastic about Suzanne’s presence outdoors. Suzanne also loves the excitement of competition, the exercise, and the great opportunity to meet new people.

Suzanne got involved with EWGA after meeting a woman at Bethpage State Park who suggested she join. She became an EWGA member the following year and has loved it ever since. “As an EWGA member I have more opportunities to play golf, more new friends and networking opportunities, and another place to revel in my passion,” she added.

As Counsel for Training & Quality Control at United General Title Insurance Company, Suzanne is able to integrate her passion for the game and her job by networking on the course.  In her eyes, it has really been a winning combination.

“EWGA provides so much in terms of opportunities to learn, play, enjoy, and network through the game of golf. I encourage members to come out to the events, and to sign up for the clinics, leagues, and educational seminars. Don’t be afraid to come out because you think you’re not good enough. You’ll learn more about yourself than ever before, while expanding your friendships and enjoying the game.”

Good advice, Suzanne. And for non-members, we encourage you to join EWGA LI. Look us up on our website: www.ewgali.org
Welcome to the Board, Suzanne, and good luck as our new Rules & Handicap Chair.

The temperature was frigid outside, but the Long Island Chapter of the Executive Women’s Golf Association heated things up inside Maxwell & Dunne’s on Thursday, February 8. More than 70 people attended, with a mix of existing and prospective members. Carolee Mancuso brought sponsors Bob Jahelka and Mike Winkoff of Demasco, Sena & Jahelka, LLP along to meet the membership.
Food, wine, and networking were the order of the evening. Members chatted all night about their plans for the upcoming golf season. From golf clinics and education to leagues, social activities, outings, and sponsorship opportunities, EWGA has it all.
Special thanks to Ellie Walsh of Crown Advertising, who graciously turned over her role as Social Events Committee Chair to Jane Gallagher of Salem Executive Search.
