EWGA Proudly Marshals 13th and 14th Holes at the 2006 U.S. Open Championship at Winged Foot
By Patrice Franco

The Lovely Ladies of the EWGA Marshal Team

The 2006 U.S. Open Championship has been in the books for over a month now, and what an incredible week it was for our EWGA U.S. Open marshal team!  Over 120 EWGA members from the Long Island chapter, sister chapters in the Metro Northeast Section, and family and friends of EWGA proudly served on our team of marshals for the 13th and 14th holes at Winged Foot. This marks the third time EWGA has had its members serve as marshals and other volunteers at a U.S. Open—first in 2002 at Bethpage, then in 2004 at Shinnecock Hills, and now at historic Winged Foot.

Our marshal team was responsible for both holes over the entire seven-day championship. Everyone did an amazing job, and many really went above and beyond the call of duty—working extra shifts, working double shifts, and always being ready to help in whatever way needed. We’re very proud to say that the 13th and 14th holes were decided to be the best marshaled holes at the 2006 U.S. Open.  This honor was voted on by the area captains, marshal chairmen, and the USGA.  Congratulations to our marshal team and to EWGA!

Just as impressive, we were also continuously complimented by USGA staff, Rules officials, as well as many spectators for doing such a great job on our holes.  It’s hard to explain what a wonderful feeling it was to have so many people tell us that they remembered EWGA from the 2002 U.S. Open at Bethpage and again in 2004 at Shinnecock.  Even a handful of players and caddies remembered us and extended their thanks for the job we did during the week! We’ve really made a lasting impression.  In the end, we are all helping to raise awareness and elevate the stature of EWGA in the golf industry!

Once again, we salute our incredible EWGA U.S. Open marshal team and thank them for their dedication, passion, and incredible efforts which made the 2006 U.S. Open another spectacular success for EWGA, the USGA, and the fans!

We hope to have even more EWGA Members join our EWGA U.S. Open marshal team when the 2009 U.S. Open returns to the famed Black Course at Bethpage!

Join EWGA Long Island, the world’s largest chapter, with over 800 members in Nassau & Suffolk, nine leagues, three major golf outings, and fabulous networking and social opportunities. Visit the Long Island chapter’s website for more information at www.ewgali.org

Swensen as CEO

The Board of Directors of the Executive Women’s Golf Association has named Pamela Swensen its Chief Executive Officer.  She has been serving as interim executive director since December 2005 and was previously the vice president of sales and marketing for the EWGA.  “We conducted an extensive, national search and found that Pam was the best candidate to lead the EWGA into the future,” says Penny Hulbert, president of the EWGA Board of Directors.  “We have elevated the position to CEO to reflect the importance we place on building our association with a strong business foundation.”

Since the EWGA started in 1991, more than 75,000 women have benefited from membership in the organization which is dedicated to providing opportunities to learn, play, and enjoy the game of golf for business and for life.  There are currently 120 chapters throughout the United States and Canada.

Swensen joined the EWGA as vice president of sales and marketing in 2002.  Previously she was vice president of The Jane Blalock Company in Boston, MA and has more than 18 years of golf industry experience in the areas of advertising, corporate communications, sales promotion, business development, and event management.  She has an undergraduate degree from Skidmore College in New York and earned a Master’s degree in Communications from Boston University.

In her new position as CEO, Swensen plans to personally meet with other CEOs and leaders throughout the golf industry to expand relationships as the EWGA builds its strategies to achieve “50 in 5,” its goal of 50,000 members in the next five years.
EWGA chapters provide a wide range of golf, social, and networking activities for both new and experienced golfers.  A welcoming environment, golf education and player development, and organized play programs are part of the many benefits of EWGA membership.

Celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2006, the EWGA is headquartered in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.  For more information about the association and its membership, visit www.ewga.com.
