Don’t Keep Your Head Down!

Some of the worst golf advice I’ve ever heard always contains the phrase, “keep your head down.”  Unfortunately, anyone who has ever picked up a golf club has heard or said this piece of advice thousands of times.  This advice is usually given when a golfer tops a shot.  Most people think that picking the head up is the reason for topping, but it’s just not that simple.  Keeping your head down won’t necessarily prevent you from topping the ball.  It’s much more likely that you had poor posture, became flippy with your swing, or “chicken-winged” it.  Golfers are so focused trying to keep their head down that they ignore these more correctable problems.  The sad thing about it is that “keeping your head down,” often convinces golfers to bury their heads in their chests, robbing their shoulders of the room they need to make a full turn and a good swing.  Other golfers will keep their eyes glued to the golf ball, even during the back swing.  Not moving the head at all makes it impossible for the spine to move, and this results in a poor weight shift.  The head will move during the swing—that’s OK!  What golfers should say is, “Keep your posture,” not “keep your head down.  ”By keeping your head back, your head will start behind the ball and stay there, allowing the rest of your body to do what it needs to do to make a perfect golf shot.
