The Baiting Hollow Club

The Fox Hill Golf and Country Club has changed its name to The Baiting Hollow Club.  The 6,815-yard par-72 championship course, located in Baiting Hollow, was designed by Robert Trent Jones and built in 1966.  The course presents a difficult but fair challenge to golfers of all levels.  Built on the bluffs of the Long Island Sound the course is known for its beautiful vistas featuring many elevated tees and greens.  The beautifully-manicured greens and fairways give you the luxury of playing under the best conditions.  The first cut of rough and fescue makes you feel like you are playing the most challenging links course, while the elevation changes, rolling fairways, and tree-lined holes are reminiscent of Westchester Country Club.

The course was opened in 1966 and has undergone both an ownership and name change.  Initially known as The Baiting Hollow Club, the club was changed to The Flag Golf Club by a new ownership group in 1983.  The Rugby Recreational Group took over in 1996, changing the name to The Fox Hill Golf and Country Club.  Now that it is back to being The Baiting Hollow Club again, the club is offering many different memberships for individuals, families, and weekday golfers.

As you can tell, The Baiting Hollow Club is going through some exciting changes.  This past winter, The Baiting Hollow Club redid all the greens on the back nine, changing to bent grass.  This summer ground will be broken for a new entrance to the facility, a new clubhouse, and a new practice facility.  In addition, 29 homes commensurate with the new facilities will be built.  To accommodate the new facilities there will be changes made to the golf course.  There will be new tee boxes, longer holes, and a renovation of existing sand traps and construction of new ones.  This winter there are plans to redo the greens on the front nine.
The course has hosted many outstanding tournaments.  Some of these include the 2006 New York State Open qualifier, the 2002 U.S. Open qualifier, the 2001 Met Open, the 2000 U.S. Amateur qualifier, the 1999 Long Island PGA Championship, the 1998 Met Open qualifier, and the 1996 Ike qualifier.

General manager Barry Beil oversees the daily activities and long-term planning of the course.  Head pro John Hines has been on staff since 1994.  In 1996 he became the club’s Director of Golf.  He is in charge of the golf facility, membership, outings, and tournaments.  Iain Wilson is the assistant pro and Tom Southard is the pro shop manager.  The entire staff’s goal is to make a day at The Baiting Hollow Club an enjoyable and pleasant experience.  They want members and guests to feel like they are away on vacation, without a care in the world... except, of course, for their golf games.
