Performance Beverage - or - Party Drink?

There’s a new category of adult beverages being served and some are showing up at golf courses.  Think Red Bull with all its stimulating caffeine, etc. blended with a beer beverage or a malt style alcohol beverage.  And add high alcohol content for good measure and you’ve got a wallop of a drink!   Catch that buzz and be sharp on the course all with one can of coolness!

Some of these have a taste similar to Red Bull for example, some with low sugar/low carbs, some with a heavier beer taste, so you may want to do your own “taste test” to see if you might enjoy a new choice during your round.  Orange flavors, berries, etc. and they’ve typically added things like ginseng, guarana, taurine, honey, and citric acid blends.  These aren’t just one-off manufacturers, this beverage category has entered the big leagues as companies like Anheuser-Busch, Mickey’s Brewing (maker of Mickey’s Bigmouth malt beer), and upstarts like Charge Beverages and Steel Brewing Company also holding their own with quality products.

These guys have cool websites with recipes for mixing and music to listen to as this drink is marketed as a lifestyle type beverage.  The Sparks can for example, looks like a large AA battery on steroids and has a twelve-pack of 10 ounce cans that looks like a car battery – talk about jump-start!  They’ve even included testimonials on some of the websites so you can see what others have to say about their experiences with the drinks.

And finally, alcohol content is up – way up – close to 7% on some of these so one 16 oz serving can make you loopy and wired all at once – wait a second . . . ?  Would that mean that it is good for your golf game?  Or better from pub to club? You decide.
