Golfers on Long Island are generally divided into two groups: public course golfers and private club members. Although there are dozens of excellent public courses, there’s a certain feeling that comes with being a member that even places like Bethpage can’t evoke. Unfortunately, many golfers lack the financial means to join a private club, or at least they think they do. Allow me to introduce you to Bellport Country Club, Long Island golf’s best-kept secret.
For over 100 years, the Village of Bellport has enjoyed its own golf course. The current 18-hole incarnation has been around since before Prohibition, when the town commissioned the late, great Seth Raynor to build a course. He did, and the par-70, 6,080-yard tract that he created 85 years ago has remained remarkably intact. The course today is a 6,234-yard par-71, and a $2 million renovation was just recently completed to improve it even further.
Although the course was in excellent shape even before the renovation, Bellport has since been transformed into a golfer’s fantasy. From the exquisite tee-boxes to the lush, perfectly-trimmed fairways to the silky-smooth greens, Bellport will impress from start to finish. The best part of this amazing golf experience is that it also features a country club atmosphere at a fraction of the price.
For under $4,000, golfers can enjoy tee-off privileges seven days a week for the entire year. There are multiple plans available to fit both your budget and schedule, such as a weekday afternoon membership, which costs less than $2,500. The best deal that Bellport offers, though, and one that I encourage any person under the age of 21 to take advantage of, is the junior membership. For only $300, junior golfers will have unlimited course access after 2 p.m. every day. Any parents who want to get their children into golf will not find a better deal than this.
Bellport Country Club features the best of both golfing worlds. With a country club atmosphere, 18 wonderful holes, and a variety of low-cost membership plans, it may just be the best deal in Long Island golf.
