It’s not about looking cool or fashionable, it’s about performance. What can I do to protect and enhance my vision while playing? And, should I wear sunglasses throughout the round, or just on the tee box and fairways? Well, we can now answer these questions and more for you! Sharpshooters have known for years that enhanced vision allows for increased performance. For example, they typically wear yellow lenses in their glasses to create visual acuity in seeing their targets. As for the golfer, typically a lens that has the ability to filter light from the blue/green spectrum tends to work well in identifying nuances in topography of greens for example, and can help you to see breaks and read greens better – besides offering the already known benefits of providing you a “wind-shield” from the elements, such as dust and dirt as you either walk or ride from shot to shot. And, in cloudy or lesser-light situations, lighter lenses can offer an ability to see better by lightening-up the environment around you. Bottom line, yes – you should wear sunglasses to protect and enhance your vision throughout your round! And, as far as a particular product or brand, you should shop carefully to find the fit, style and again, most importantly the lens that tends to fit your game and your eyes best. You should have no hesitation investing in a good pair of “performance optics” as your eyes are a valuable resource both on and off the course. Here are a couple of our favorite brands: 535s Sport Optics
Featuring the c3 lens, the 535s are engineered as the only golf lens built from the ground up. They’ve engineered a lens that has all the features a golfer needs and perfected three other areas. First they have something they call the “right light transmission schedule” for golf by allowing more green light through the lens. Then they added an infrared filter to help the golfer relax their eyes over the hours it takes to play a round. Finally and most importantly, they added their exclusive Color Converter (C3) technology. They basically take red and blue light and convert it to green. The result is that the golfer gets all the benefits of high end sunglasses: glare reduction, better distance vision and they also allow the golfer to see more details across the putting surface, allowing the wearer improved ability to putt. A 5% putting improvement for a competitive golfer is 4 strokes across a four round tournament! Quite significant. Reach out to them at

PeakVision sports creates a product with Dual-Zone Technology designed to work together to deliver proper visualization through precise light-management filters, enhanced optical clarity throughout the field of view and 100% distortion-free optics. Their dual zone filters enhance distance perception while reducing glare from the sun. For the long game, this perfectly tuned upper filter delivers clear vision, optimally balancing the light intensity for performance golf. The lower zone is tinted a specific amber wavelength that optimizes the golfer’s vision of the green turf, enhances the undulations and terrain of the putting surface and enables you to read the grain of the grass. The optical quality, clarity, lightness and impact resistance of their NXT lenses provide clear, comfortable vision with no optical distortion.

SunBuster
SunBuster’s trademark “purple” PuttReaders lens has quickly become one of the hottest products in the golf industry. In the past, players have been hesitant to wear eyewear during their round. That’s because no one has ever thought to address the problem of (ESD) Eye-Plane Shift Distortion, one of the most common problems facing golfers who wear ordinary sunglasses while they play. SunBuster’s Sport Enhancement Eyewear (S.E.E.) with GolfCorrect™ Technology is designed and optically ground to eliminate ESD. A proper golf posture requires that the chin be lifted so that the shoulders can freely rotate during the swing. Lifting the chin causes the golfer to lower his or her eyes and look through the bottom half of the lens to see the ball. This is what causes ESD if you’re wearing ordinary sunglasses. Sunbuster’s GolfCorrect lenses are de-centered and optically ground to provide a clear, crisp, undistorted view of the golf ball and feature a “purple” PuttReadersTM lens that selectively filters light in the visible spectrum so that golfers can see the fairways, pins, and putting surfaces with perfect clarity, contour definition, color separation, and depth perception. The revolutionary new lens brings out the contours and eliminates the guesswork normally involved in reading a green. With this kind of technology on your side, fewer putts per round and lower golf scores are just around the corner.

If you bring these to the course – keep them in the bag. There are great new products available from the companies mentioned above. Seek them out, find a lens FIRST, then a style, as it’s your eyes that you need to pay close attention to here, not necessarily the style as the primary point of consideration. Finally, your investment in a good pair (or two) of golf-centric performance optics will pay off with better vision on and off the course!
