Even at the highest level of play, body types vary greatly. Take for example some of the bigger names, Lee Westwood, Rickie Fowler, and Bubba Watson. All three of these players have different body types in comparison to the others mentioned. All three have been highly successful on tour because they have developed an efficient swing pattern for their body type. A swing pattern is the specific way in which an individual swings the golf club.
Some players who hook the ball may have a natural draw swing pattern. However, somewhere in their swing they are doing something that does not work with their pattern of swinging the golf club which creates a massive hook, as opposed to a nice draw. Same applies to a player who may have a solid fade swing which has potential to produce very accurate results. However this player may have a component in their swing that forces them to hit pulls or sweeping slices on every tee shot. Whether your ball tends to slice or hook, fly low or high, it is part of your golf identity. It may not always be the case that you have to get rid of it, but you may need something to get your swing under control. This will turn the slice into an intentional fade, or that hook into a called for draw.
The importance of understanding your own swing pattern is crucial to improvement. A player who understands their own swing pattern then becomes a much more effective player. You will then be able to play a course to all of your strengths while managing to stay away from your weak areas. Knowing your pattern will give you a clear feeling and mental picture of what you need to do to produce the best shot possible for you! Not all of us can compete with guys who physically train and hit balls for ten hours a day, but we can all have our own competitive identity on the golf course among whomever we play with.
