Sound itself is such an integral part of the golf experience. In fact club companies have spent millions of dollars in research and development and developed a myriad of dampening materials to achieve the perfect sound, because sound is feel. If you don’t believe this, put in a pair of ear plugs or sound proof head phones and hit some golf balls. You’ll “feel” as if you’re club has no “sweet spot!” But music may just be the “poor man’s sport psychologist!”
When you go to the range at any Tour event, you may not notice this “high tech” golf aid. It’s not attached to the club or laying on the ground. I’m talking about the tiny “ear buds” connected to MP3 players they all seem to be sporting. Make no mistake music, the “food of love,” as Shakespeare once described it, just may be the perfect elixir. Many studies have been done to see if listening to music while hitting golf balls can really lower your scores. To date there is no empirical data to supporting a direct correlation to scoring, but we do know there are many therapeutic benefits of music.
Music establishes a subconscious tempo. Music provides a platform to synchronize rhythm and movement important to a repeatable swing. Music can act as a trigger for learning certain motions. In fact, brain experts at Nara University in Japan have concluded music enhances the secretion of hormones that lead to cerebral plasticity by helping to repair and regenerate nerves in the brain. Cerebral Plasticity is what allows us to not only learn new things but establish and retain memories such as feel and tempo or what the lay person might refer to as “muscle memory.”
Worst case, music can provide an emotional distraction and mood altering experience that is calming. Lord knows some days that’s the best remedy of all!
