Instructional Tip - Stop Guessing. By George Conner
Look at the two cards in picture below. Do the two curved cards look the same size or is Card B bigger?
If you said “no”, you just experienced why you and so many other people struggle to read greens. The mere fact that we call it “green reading” is part of the problem. Reading is a word which most often implies using your eyes. Well your eyes can play tricks on you. When you attempt to discern how a putt will break by using your eyes you are subject to optical illusions. When using just your eyes to “see” undulations you will invariably be influenced by your surroundings. How a ball will curve as it rolls across a putting green is a function of the slope that the ball is rolling across. How a ball curves is not a function of where the sun will eventually set, or where the nearest body of water is situated. If you are only using your eyes to read greens, frankly, you are only guessing.
Look at the next picture of the curved cards. Which one looks bigger now?
As you have been watching tournament golf on television in the past year, you may have noticed more and more golfers standing near the line of their putt and then holding up fingers while standing behind their ball. These players are using a system called AimPoint. The foundation behind Aimpoint is to eliminate the guessing. When using Aimpoint we use our feet to feel the slope we will be putting across and then use either fingers or even a chart to define how much the putt will curve as it rolls to the hole.
Do yourself a favor this Spring. Learn a reliable system to accurately predict how your putts will break. Believe me, knowing how all your putts will curve is the missing piece for so many players. Great putters:
Have the ability to predict how a ball will break
Have the ability to start the ball on the intended line and the ability to roll the ball at precise speed.
If you take away one of those skills you are destined to only be a mediocre putter. You can spend a lifetime developing the ability to read greens accurately, or you can learn a system that will allow you to read greens like an expert now.
Learning how to use the AimPoint system is easy. With a couple hours of instruction you can move right onto the golf course and use it effectively. Attend a class; learn the same system used by Tour players all over the world and start making more putts now.
