The Putter
Tips on What to Look for in a Putter

With the plethora of putters on the market today it’s quite easy to become totally baffled as to what wand is best for you. So, we checked in with putting guru, George Connor, 2-Time Connecticut Section Teacher of the Year and Director of Instruction at Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield, CT, and asked him what to look for when buying a new putter.
“To not get a putter that is custom fit is just silly. It is the club that you use the most. Furthermore, putting is the one part of the game where one or two degrees of error can result in failure. A 150-yard shot from the fairway that is pulled one degree left will in many cases still be on the green. A 12-foot putt that starts one degree of where it should have won’t go in the hole.”
Here are some keys Connor said to consider when buying a putter.

Putter length: The proper length putter will allow the golfer to have good posture, which in turn will allow the golfer to effectively move the putter throughout the stroke.

Lie angle: A putter has loft, which makes the lie angle critical. If the sole of the putter is sitting flat on the ground, the putter is aimed perpendicular to the leading edge of the putter. However, if the putter is not sitting flat, the loft of the putter will make the face of the club aim in a different direction. For example, if the toe of the putter is in the air, the face of the putter will actually be facing left. “Remember, we are talking about very small tolerances here,” Connor said.

Weight: The weight of a putter can help or hinder your ability to roll the ball the appropriate distance. Converse to most people’s thinking, if you are playing very fast greens on a regular basis you need a heavier putter. If you typically play slow greens, a lighter putter would benefit you. The most significant factor that contributes to how far a putt will travel is the speed that the putter is moving through the ball. The heavier the putter is the slower it tends to move.

Head style: Almost every golfer will have an aim bias. Believing that they are aiming the putter directly at the hole, most golfers will have a tendency to aim either right or left. It is rare for a golfer to miss-aim to both sides of the hole. Said Connor, “Nearly two-thirds of golfers tend to aim to the left of where they think they are aimed. Certain head styles could make your aim bias worse, whereas others might help you see straight more accurately.” He said if you tend to aim left try a putter that has no offset. A putter with a rounded back edge might be better for you than one where the back edge is parallel to the leading edge.
Take these factors into careful consideration when you head to your local pro shop or off-course retail outlet. It will help you find a putter that works and knocks strokes off your score.
