These New Innovations Keep the Golf Season Going Year-Round

Golf is the season that never ends. While we may be going into the off-season, equipment manufacturers keep the innovations coming year-round, and Golfing Magazine gives you a little sneak peak at some of the latest and greatest golf products on the market in our Launch Pad section.
High-tech rules today’s golf scene and for good reason. Thanks to forward-thinking equipment manufacturers and their heady
R & D departments, there is absolutely no reason not to have in your hands the ideal club to reach the flagstick, regardless of where you are on the course.
Many companies wait until the PGA Merchandise Show in late January to kick out their hot toys for the new golf season, however for others it’s all about jumping the competition and beating them to the punch in order to attract the attention of the playing and paying public. So, sit back and take a gander at some of the newest items to hit the golf shops. Like a summer that never ends, there’s always something dreamy to ponder when it comes to golf equipment.

Adams Golf Tight Lies Fairway Wood

The company says its new Tight Lies Fairway Wood will “revolutionize the game just as the original did.”
A classic revolutionary club design, combined with today’s technology, make the new Tight Lies the easiest-to-hit fairway wood, and is packed with a hot face for increased distance, says the company. The multi-purpose metal wood gets the ball airborne from any lie with its low-profile, upside-down head, and a Tri-level sole design that reduces the amount of turf interaction from the fairway, rough or tight lies and creates a larger impact area below the ball to promote crisper contact and easier launch.
In addition, patented “Cut-Thru” Velocity Slot Technology in the crown and sole features a channel that is literally cut through the head of the club from the top slot to the bottom, allowing optimum face deflection and trampoline effect for straighter, longer shots from any lie.

TaylorMade SLDR
Moves Forward with Movable Weight
“A forward and low CG is the holy grail for creating maximum ball velocity and optimizing launch conditions,” says TaylorMade’s chief technical officer Benoit Vincent. “A low and forward CG creates a larger area of the face that will produce higher launch angles and lower spin. Higher launch with lower spin leads to a longer carry on tee shots combined with the potential for more roll because of the shallower descent angle.” So that’s exactly what TaylorMade did with the SLDR. But the improvements don’t stop at just high launch, low spin and a larger sweet spot.
When you see the SLDR for the first time the first thing you notice is that it is not white! But when you look at the undercarriage, you see that TaylorMade has “reinvented” moveable weight by placing an adjustable weight, (now a full 20 grams!) in a “speed slot” mechanism on the sole located right behind the face much like in the company’s “fast faced” RocketBallz fairway woods and rescues.
The new sliding weight system is not only more user-intuitive with clear designations for “DRAW” or “FADE,” it’s also better technology,” says Tom Olsavsky, TaylorMade’s senior director of product creation.

Tour Edge XCG7 Driver

The XCG7 adjustable driver is available in two different clubheads, 440 cc (Beta) and 460 cc, and features upgraded performance in a titanium, 460 cc driver head that produces easy-launching and high trajectory with added forgiveness. The new driver incorporates added adjustability with loft options from 8.5 to 12 degrees in half- degree increments.
The Beta, 440 cc adjustable clubhead presents a smaller, refined shape composed of titanium with a deeper, beta titanium face. The new head also incorporates added adjustability with loft options from 8.5 to 12 degrees in half degree increments creating a penetrating trajectory.
Four advanced-position hexahedron weight pads maximize moment of inertia for greater stability in each clubhead. The weighting positions the center of gravity in the optimal location in the XCG7 lower and deeper in the head for mid spin and a higher launch angle. For a more penetrating launch angle, and to minimize spin, the pads in the Beta are located higher and closer to the face.

Alphard Duo Golf Cart – Bag + Cart In-One

The revolutionary Duo Cart is an all-in-one pushcart and golf bag combination that is extremely compact, so it fits easily in the trunk of your car, and takes just seconds to set up. With the turn of a handle, the hydraulic assisted frame has your bag locked in place and ready to go. Not the right height? That’s okay. The Duo Cart is the only pushcart in the industry that allows you to adjust the height and angle of the handlebar to make it more comfortable and easier to push. The Duo Cart has four wheels that provide a low center of gravity and outstanding stability on even the roughest terrain. The unique varied height base features fourteen full-length dividers that minimize club rattling. The Bag itself has a plethora of storage pockets for balls, tees, raingear, and other necessities as well as a built-in Cooler Pocket (with drains) that can store up to six ice cold drinks. It comes standard with attachable accessories like an umbrella holder and an adjustable drink holder and other accessories like a GPS holder and cart seat can be ordered separately as well. Another interesting feature of the Duo Cart is its unique fabric layer, known as the “skin”, which can be easily detached in less than a minute. With multiple colors to choose from (Red, Black or Navy), the skin can be switched out to compliment your apparel or express your style on the course. Best of all the Duo Cart is what I like to call “Riding Cart Friendly”, which means its front and rear wheels can be removed from the anodized aluminum frame in just seconds and converted into a cart bag, which fits on all standard electric or gas carts, should you decide to Ride instead of Walk!

The Duo Cart sells for $279.95 and can be ordered online at

Adams Golf New Idea Irons
The sole Velocity Slot Technology aids in increased trampoline effect for the ball off the clubface (boosting speed by 1.5mph and 1 degree of launch angle according to the company). The Idea irons feature new wraparound slot up to 270° that expands sweet spot of club, with 25% more forgiveness on off-center hits for added distance. Progressive shaping makes it easier for players to get the ball airborne from any lie The set make-up includes 4-, 5- and 6-hybrids, 7- and 8- patented Transitional Hybrids, which combine hybrids and irons and scoring clubs of 9-irons, PW and SW.

TaylorMade SpeedBlade Irons

SpeedBlade is a game-improvement iron designed to help launch the ball exceptionally high and far. The key performance feature that separates SpeedBlade from the pack is the Speed Pocket, a handle-bar shaped slot in the sole of the 3-7 irons that enables a large area of the face to flex and rebound at impact, resulting in faster ball speed, higher launch and softer feel.
TaylorMade iron engineers have strategically worked with the company’s metalwood team to better understand how to incorporate driver design into an iron. The result of that effort is the SpeedBlade, which combines a low center of gravity with TaylorMade’s thinnest/fastest iron face to date. Along with the company’s patented Inverted Cone Technology that provides a bigger sweet spot on off-center hits and an improved Speed Pocket.

Mizuno MP-4 Irons
The MP-4 is a flat out, pure forged, muscle back for highly skilled shot-makers seeking control over their ball flight that only a blade can produce. A longer, softer sense of impact results from the MP-4’s bulging muscle design that extends higher up the clubface, enhancing the feel of Mizuno’s patented Grain Flow Forged construction. The muscle bulge is most prominent in the scoring irons and reduces down through to the slender long irons. Mizuno’s team of master club grinders made minor adjustments by eye to every CAD generated club head through the set before creating MP-4’s master forging molds. Make no mistake, the MP-4 is not about forgiveness, but if you’ve got game these blades won’t disappoint. www.MizunoUSA.com

Cobra Tour Trusty Wedges

The Tour Trusty’s non-offset compact shaping along with a straighter leading edge help with alignment at address. The groove edges and volume have been maximized to the USGA allowable limit for improved spin. COBRA’s new Tour notch K-Grind provides heel and toe relief for versatility around the greens.
COBRA’s proprietary milling consists of two depths of cut to maximize spin on different shots. The Tour Trusty is Cast from 8620 Carbon Steel and is available in a Tour Matte Satin and Tour Matte Black PVD finish with 11 loft/bounce options.

Mizuno MP-54 Irons
The MP-54 is a thick, powerful Grain Flow Forged iron crafted to awaken the shot maker in players needing just a little forgiveness. “The MP-54 is for players who have grown up on forgiving golf equipment, but want a little bit more from their shot making. It’s still MP, still traditional – but more aggressive” claims David Llewellyn, Mizuno’s Golf Club R&D Manager. A deep Milled Pocket Cavity in the 3-7 iron delivers stability on off-center strikes, while a heavily beveled sole ensures cleaner turf interaction and workability. The 8 iron through PW feature a solid muscle design for enhanced feel and maneuverability. The pure feel of Mizuno’s one piece Grain Flow Forged 1025E Mild Carbon steel construction is heightened through a Step Muscle design that retains thickness behind impact.

Adams Golf XTD Ti Hybrid
Adams Golf says the XTD Ti Hybrid has the hottest hybrid face ever created and has a CT (speed off) clubface that approaches USGA limits and is comparable to that of a driver.
It features multi-material construction (titanium crown/face and steel sole) for optimally low center of gravity and ideal launch angle.
Velocity Slots in the crown and sole of the club feature a channel that is literally cut through the head of the club from the top slot to the bottom allowing for an unsupported face for optimum face deflection and trampoline effect for increased, hot ball flight. The company says distance gains are up to 15 yards compared to clubs without slots (67 percent) more flexion than standard hybrid.
The club also comes in fairway wood models.

PING S55 Irons
This tour-style blade iron with stronger lofts provides added distance with control. The 17-4 stainless steel heads feature a tungsten toe weight to enhance forgiveness, and a vertical stabilizing bar for precise distance control. Lofts are strengthened to add distance (1* in the pitching wedge, ˝* in the 6-iron, then progressively less through the 3-iron, where there’s no change). The low-profile custom tuning port (CTP) has changed from a thermoplastic urethane to a thermoplastic elastomer that absorbs vibrations, resulting in a softer feel at impact. The CG is a little lower throughout the set, with the wedge being slightly more forward and the 3-iron’s CG slightly farther back relative to the S56. As a result, wedge shots will be lower and more penetrating while long-iron shots will launch higher.

TaylorMade New Ghost Tour Putter
The TaylorMade Putter designers have reverted back to their artistic, Kia Ma, roots paying attention to fine detailing and craftsmanship for their new line of Ghost Tour putters. The new Ghost Tour putters feature the same secondary alignment system as the company’s Spider Blade and Spider Mallet putters with white lines in the cavity of the putter head that are parallel to the putters’ dominant alignment line. This new batch of Ghost Tour putters have TaylorMade’s new 80/20 Pure Roll insert, which is made from 80 percent Surlyn and 20 percent aluminum.
The putters have head weights of 350 grams, 5 grams heavier than the previous line. But unlike the previous line, the new putters do not have adjustable sole weights. The Maranello 81 has been updated to have less offset, using new hosel blend that gives the putter a cleaner look at address. The Monte Carlo 12 has been updated to have an “L” or plumber’s neck, which is similar to TaylorMade’s Spider Mallet putter used by Sergio Garcia. The Sebring 62 has also been modified to have more toe hang, which works better for golfers who have arching putter strokes.

Mizuno JPX-EZ Irons
Combining Mizuno’s Hot Metal face design and ultra pocket cavity (in the four- through 7-iron) allows the JPX-EZ irons to fire higher and longer with a predictable, tight dispersion for better accuracy on all shots. A Harmonic Impact Technology (H.I.T.) engineered cavity frame ensures that the JPX-EZ feels “like every Mizuno iron should, but with forgiveness you can’t imagine.”
The irons maximum pocket cavity on the four- through seven-iron produces a massive sweet area, tight shot dispersion, and effortless launch characteristics for closer shots to the pin and enhanced confidence at address.
A deep pocket cavity in the 8-iron through gap wedge in the set is designed to improve accuracy and launch control, while a Hot Metal Face is actually a multi-thickness design that creates a maximum coefficient of restitution to deliver long, consistent distance.
The Harmonic Impact Technology (H.I.T) also produces superb feel and sound through a cavity frame design to give the golfer better feedback on shots. Custom set make ups are available in mixed/combo sets or with JPX FLI-HI long iron alternatives
